When it comes to display devices, companies have been focusing on enhancing user interaction experience. The emergence of touchscreens significantly improved display devices. Monitors, laptop screens and even commercial displays nowadays come equipped with touchscreens. They make it easy to operate the devices and free users from keyboards and mice. Projectors are the latest crop of devices that have jumped on the touchscreen bandwagon.
Touchscreen projectors enable users to interact with the display area like other touchscreen devices. Some projectors may require the use of a stylus while others may support finger touch enabling users to interact directly with the projected screen. The projectors have an inbuilt IR sensor or cameras for detecting and analyzing the interaction of the users with the projected display. The sensor and camera keep track of the stylus or hand movement and allow users to control the screen. Their working is similar to that of a computer mouse. A few models might even support gesture recognition.
Interactive projectors are another type of display devices that are similar to the touchscreen projectors. They also enable users to interact with the projected image. However, they are designed for permanent installation and are not portable. Most of them require a projector screen or a curtain, unlike the touchscreen projectors that can work with any surface. Interactive projectors are mostly used in classrooms, conference rooms, and offices. Touchscreen projectors are not just limited to projector screens. They are lightweight and portable and can project on different flat surfaces that include tables, walls, and floors.
The functions supported by a touchscreen projector will depend on the features of the projector and the application being used.
Business users can swipe the slides of their presentations without the need of powerpoint remote controls. They can interact with the screen to zoom in or out of images, traverse pages and highlight content which enables them to give presentations more effectively.
Home users can browse the web, watch movies, and use different applications without needing a dedicated display. Some touchscreen projectors might even allow users to play single and multiplayer games.
A big advantage of the touchscreen projectors is that they eliminate the need for additional hardware. Most of these projectors come installed with an operating system like the Android OS and can be used without connecting laptops or computers to them. They may also have an inbuilt battery, one or more speakers, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capability. The projectors provide users with flexible placement options and can be used on walls or tables without the need for dedicated projector screens.
Touchscreen projectors weigh less than their regular counterparts and can be transported from one place to another. They are ideal for situations wherein the users need to move the projector from one place to another frequently. They can be used in living rooms, drawing rooms, kitchens, offices, classrooms or any other place with a flat surface. Touchscreen projectors can also be carried along on camping trips and vacations due to their high portability.
Touchscreen Projectors are available from a few brands today.

The touchscreen projector technology is still in the nascent stage. There are a few models available from different brands for early adopters. While these projectors are primarily designed for home users, they are also beneficial for individuals who need portable devices that they can carry along. These can include business persons who have to give presentations at different places as well as educators who don’t have fixed projectors in their classrooms.
Touchscreen projectors don’t have the same features as their standard counterparts. They have lower resolution and lumens rating and won’t be able to match the image quality of standard projectors. However, as technology advances, touchscreen projectors are surely bound to improve. It is quite possible in near future that these projectors may boast of resolution and features that match today’s premium home theatre projectors. Considering that touch screen projectors are easy to use and provide interactive user interfaces, they might become indispensable devices for every homeowner and professional alike in the near future.
